3D Photogrammetry

The Art and Science of 3D Photogrammetry (Image-Based Modeling)

3D Photogrammetry is the art and science of calculating reliable measurement data from 2D photographs or images in order to construct an accurate 3D model. This process employs geometry, mathematics and physics in conjunction with advanced technology to determine precise coordinates. Photogrammetry, also known as image-based modeling, is typically applied to two or more images taken from different positions. Once the images have been interpreted and the 3D coordinates established, these measurements define the location of object points in space.

One of the fundamental aspects of photogrammetry is that it can be used to accurately interpret and recreate objects without physically touching them. This also means that this method of image interpretation is especially useful for applying to objects that may no longer be available for measurement.

Applications of 3D Photogrammetry

Photogrammetry is used in various industries and fields, including architecture, real estate development, engineering, medicine and filmmaking. There are many real-world applications for the extracted measurement data, including constructing 3D models and building 3D architecture.

This method of object interpretation and object measurement is often divided into its two main facets: aerial photogrammetry (far-range) and terrestrial photogrammetry (close-range).

Aerial photogrammetry is typically used to create maps and digital terrain models. Terrestrial photogrammetry may be used by architects, engineers, surgeons or law enforcement.

PIXELWEAVE 3D Photogrammetry

We specialize in the use of photogrammetry to create highly accurate 3D models from digital photographs. The 3D models are then textured, lit and animated to produce highly detailed photo-realistic renderings.

With this technique, we can model and render existing scenes from photographs, both stills and panoramas. By referencing the digital images, we use geometry to extract the texture and lighting information from the real environment. The value of this 3D photogrammetry process is that it allows us to create virtual camera moves that would be difficult or impossible in reality.

Benefits of 3D Photogrammetry

  • Generate 3D models for visualization and view studies.
  • Reconstruct photo-realistic scenes for walk-throughs our fly-overs.
  • Integrate concepts into existing environments seamlessly.
  • Match camera perspective for overlaying 3D onto 2D pictures.
  • Survey existing structures and environments.
  • Document and measure older structures for conservation and preservation.
